REALITY CHECK

These days, it’s hardly comforting
To meet someone who says, ‘I’m Christian’
Because when ‘God bless you’ becomes a generic term
You begin to wonder what the preachers preach and the church folk learn.
And for many of us who say we do,
I wonder which God we really pray to
Cuz our prayerlines are clogged with ‘Me’, ‘My’ and ‘I’s
And then our lifestyles are clanging cymbals of compromise;
Everybody carving out a religion that suits them
Mixing yoga and horoscope charts with ‘Amen!’
Filling our minds with a story
Like that evolution theory
Glorifying the Big Bang
Condemning with our lips what Jay-Z sang
Yet busting a move
To that Beyonce groove.
Can we make up our minds which lifestyle we living?
Cuz the way we flow with everything
One might mistake Jesus for Buddha’s second cousin.
Before you laugh and call that last line absurd,
How much of the Jesus you know have you personally read?
And just how much of him have you shared?
Are you a source from which others have heard?
Is your Bible more to you than an ornament for your bed?
Aint it weird?
We acknowledge God saved us at a cost
But all day, we can talk Prada or Hugo Boss
Naruto, i-pods, Gossip Girl, X-box
But we get skittish around the topic of the Cross.
We can discuss football with anyone we meet
Politics; or so-called men-of-God’s misdeeds
But we wont psych ourselves to tell a stranger
About the Saviour who was born in a manger.
Miracles, blessings, fasting, retreats
Absorbed in things that make us feel holy.
We talk the talk, we sing the hymns
But our lights to the world continue to dim;
And before you start to feel superior;
Marking off people in your head who need a Deliverer
Start with the person in the mirror
Yes, you; let’s do a minor soul search
Like
How many poor people did you ignore on your way to church
Ouch
Maybe I shouldn’t have touched that
But Jesus did say our wealth could end up as our trap.
And when we’re spiteful and unloving in our hearts
When we’re mean and refuse to give
Condemning the way the less-fortunate have lived
Aren’t we being the Pharisees Jesus said not to be;
Throning ourselves in the Judgement seat?
Let’s get this one thing straight:
It’s black and white; don’t call it grey
Obey or disobey
Do what Jesus says or go your way.
But should you choose
To dance to your own tune;
To mix the holy with your secular views
Don’t bring me your excuse.
You may call yourself a Christian; but what’s the use?
You may impress some; but what will you have proved?
For all your pretending, God aint fooled...
God aint fooled
That’s the reality check we need
Before we hang ourselves by the lives we lead
Jesus died so we could be a new, separate breed
If you say you’re a Christian, live out the creed.
Turn off the TV and pick up the Bible
Pour out the love and turn down the libel.
Live in the light; don’t let the darkness blend
In Christ’s love tell the truth to your gay friend.
If you’ve spent so much time
To read or listen to this rhyme
I hope it spurs you on to Kingdom business
To the basics of who Christ- and a Christian- is
Don’t be distressed by the many things we need to re-arrange;
The Holy Spirit within us is the strength we need to change.
